This volume collects a selection of the papers presented at the Congress, revised and expanded for publication, and organised into six thematic parts that mirror the principal legal challenges facing the current wave of nuclear new build projects worldwide. [...]
Taken together, these fourteen chapters illustrate both the breadth of the legal community’s engagement with the nuclear new build renaissance and the extent of the work that remains to be done. Contracting models designed for a different era, certification regimes that have yet to be harmonised across borders, liability and waste management frameworks still being tested for the first time in several jurisdictions, and entirely new frontiers such as the use of nuclear technology in space all point to the same underlying conclusion: technology is advancing faster than the legal and regulatory architecture built to support it. It is precisely this gap that the Nuclear Inter Jura Congress—and, we hope, this volume—seeks to help close, by bringing together practitioners, regulators, academics and in-house counsel from across the world to share experience and propose new approaches.
